Well I did buy the game.
I love the RPG aspect of it. instead of given a list of possible responses when talking to NPCs, you are actually given a list of ideas or thoughts. bascially the game asks what is on your mind and then uses that knowledge to decide what you say next. I think its pretty interesting.
The game does have some action/shooter aspects in it, but for the most part the game is RPG.
There are 3 different skill areas
Combat: possible use of all weapons
Tech: Ability to manipulate electronics for good or sabotage
Biotic: Mind of matter (kind of like the Force)
And there are 6 different Classes you can choose from.
Soldier = Combat
Engineer = Tech
Adept = Biotec
Infiltrator = Combat/Tech
Vanguard = Biotic/Combat
Sentinel = Biotic/Tech
Because I read the paperback book Mass Effect: Revelation, I already know all the different races backgrounds as well as the history leading up to the current situation so those various discussions were just review for me, but for those who havent read the book its a good idea to pay attention to what your being told. although you can check back later and review this info through your Codex and Journal.
I also recognize some voices already for example
Seth Green as Joker
Raphael Sbarge as Kaidan Alenko (voice of Carth Onasi from KOTOR)
Kimberly Brooks as Ashley Williams (voice of Niobe from Path of Neo)
Keith David as Captain David Anderson (Abu from the movie Pitch Black and Chronicles of Rid-edited-)
This is just a few, I'm sure there will be plenty more I'll recognize as the game continues. LOL
I'm surprised that this game isn't more like real RPGs (KOTOR is still the closest Ive ever seen a video game come to this) But it still has the feel of a real RPG.
I admit the pauses do get a little annoying, but I'm totally addicted to this game, I like that I have some choice in where to spend experience and I especially like that you gain experience through role playing as well as action. but its still pretty limited on what you are allowed to spend those XPs on.
It took me a little getting used to the controls, and I still on occasion find myself instinctively hitting the wrong button thinking back to the old KOTOR controls. lol at least I haven't shot any innocent bystanders yet by hitting wrong buttons.
But my favorite aspect has to be listening to all the dialog in the game. listening in on other peoples conversations is pretty kewl, and I especially get a kick out of some of the characters from your own party talking to each other while riding in the elevator. lol
I'm a little puzzled about having a group of people under my control though, From reading the paperback book, and other various descriptions it seems the "Spectres" always work alone except on rare occasions. But not only am I a Spectre, but I have a whole crew under my command. just thought that seemed strange.
I also found it interesting that one of the bad guys from the book is actually part of my team. heh heh
Oh and I also like how the game sometimes talks about things from the past, and if you had read the book you actually know the whole story of what they are referring to. First time Ive seen a game and book compliment each other so well.
I completed my first run through of the game, and a very kewl feature is you can start a new game and continue using you character from the previous game with all its experience, levels and weapons.
I finished the game in just under 50 hours, and didn't even go through all the side quests.
I also only received 15 achievements. out of 45.
So far I have
Search and Rescue
Charismatic
Spectre Inductee
Paramour (I know I wasn't going to do this one, but my daughters insisted lol)
Paragon
Geth Hunter
Dog of War
Medal of Exploration
Tactician
Pistol Expert
Honorarium of Corporate Service
Council Legion of Merit
Distinguished Service Medal
Medal of Heroism
Medal of Honor
Oh And all the team members that join me start out at my level also, so right off the bat I have over 60 experience points to build them with. LOL
Plus all the weapons that the other members carried on the previous game are still in my inventory and still have all the upgrades on them. So its just a matter of re-equipping the characters when they join my party.
Of course this time through my main goal is to try and complete 100% of the side quests. which will still have plenty of new adventures for me that I haven't experienced yet.
So if you love RPGs then I strongly suggest getting this game.
But if your into action and shooter games, then this might not be very interesting to you.
