I just finished this book and my oldest daughter is about halfway through the book and I have to say that if you havent read it yet, it is worth checking out. I havent seen the movie yet, but I am pretty sure It wont be able to measure up. For those who have read at least the first book I strongly suggest you read the partial draft of "Midnight Sun: Edward's Version of Twilight" Unfortunately Stephenie Meyer has put the full book on Indefinet hold, so this is probably all we will ever see from her which is very sad as I find this version of the story MUCH better and it gives me a brand new view on Edward and the horrible struggles he went through. While Reading Twilight, Edward was my least favorite of the Cullen's, but now he is my second favorite over all. This is a link to the Official version of the Partial Draft hosted on Stephenie Meyers website. Enjoy. Midnight Sun Partial Draft

Heh, my initial exposure to this series was through a very negative review. After reading the first book, I'm a bit inclined to agree with some of the reviewer's thoughts. I must say that I did find Bella extremely irritating during the second half of the book. Her repetitive adoration of Edward filled up lots of those pages. I can't say that the series has appealed to me so far. However, I am curious to know what happens. I'll get to the rest someday...

Yes my first exposure was a very negative book review, which kept me from reading it till recently, and while I do agree with many of "Bella"s flaws, I also take into account that she acts like a large majority of females I know so maybe that is her appeal, BUT as someone who honestly does not want my daughters to act like most females I know, not only am I letting my daughters read this series, but I am actively discussing it with them and I do point out the various issues and we talk about why certain things would be wrong or right in a real life situation.
I was reluctant at first, but as an aspiring writer, and a dedicated reader, I finally figured out that "This is Fiction". and as long as I keep open dialog with my daughters, simple fiction by itself isn't going to teach them to make wrong choices.
I guess I use the same argument for books that I have been using about video games, movies and TV shows for years. Parents are ultimately responsible to teach their kids the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Unfortunately from my experience most parents/adults dont even know enough to teach themselves this anymore.
But I still say reading the "Midnight Sun" is a great counter balance to 'Twilight'. Edward while losing his own battle with his Vampire attraction, still constantly battles and warns against the attraction Bella has for him.
Of course I personally know better than to believe in all that love and romance crap, but it still is a very popular story device in most books. I guess that's why its called "FICTION". heh
